The Canon EOS R8 Mirrorless Camera with Cropping Guide Firmware is a compact, travel-ready full-frame camera for photographers and content creators who want pro-level image quality in a small body. It weighs less than a pound (body only) and uses the RF lens mount, which gives you access to Canon’s full range of RF lenses. At its core are a 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor (the same sensor class as the EOS R6 Mark II) and the DIGIC X image processor. Together they deliver detailed images with rich, accurate color and strong low-light performance, with an ISO range of 100-102400, expandable to 204800. It also shoots up to 40 fps with the electronic shutter, with pre-shooting support that starts capturing 0.5 seconds before you fully press the shutter button.

This version comes with Canon’s Cropping Guide firmware, built for high-volume portrait photographers. It overlays one of four guides on both the electronic viewfinder and the rear LCD. Guides cover adult and child head sizes, three head sizes at once, and left and right positioning lines for limbs and props. The outer frame of each guide matches 5 x 7" and 8 x 10" print sizes and works in both vertical and horizontal orientation. This keeps subjects consistently positioned from shot to shot, which speeds up post-processing for school photos, team photos, headshots, and event portraits.

The EOS R8 is also a capable video camera. It records uncropped 4K UHD at up to 60 fps, oversampled from 6K, in 4:2:2 10-bit quality. Full HD at 180 fps gives you slow-motion playback. Canon Log 3 and HDR PQ give you flexibility for color grading or ready-to-view HDR footage, and Movie Digital IS keeps handheld footage steady. Maximum movie recording time is up to 2 hours. Vertical movie mode and aspect markers help you frame content for social media. The camera also works as a UVC/UAC webcam for livestreaming and video calls without extra software.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II uses 1,053 automatic AF points that cover the entire sensor area. It detects and tracks people, animals, and vehicles, and focuses in light as low as -6.5 EV. Framing is handled by a 2.36-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder (up to 120 fps refresh) and a 3.0" 1.62-million-dot vari-angle touchscreen LCD for shooting from high, low, and selfie angles. Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, a USB-C port, and the Canon Camera Connect app make transferring files, remote control, and geotagging simple. Ports include micro-HDMI, a microphone input, and a headphone jack. The Multi-Function Shoe supports compatible accessories and can power select ones.
